Learning in real-world contexts is essential for students to learn better and appreciate the relevant knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom. Service learning at Parami offers an exciting opportunity to make an impact while deepening knowledge. This is precisely what Khaing Thazin Phyoe, a Statistics and Data Science junior at Parami University, discovered during her recent internship with Inkukuleko’s social media and web presence team this year. Khaing, who has a knack for data, social media marketing, and content creation, was thrilled to combine her academic expertise with her interest in storytelling to help strengthen the organization’s brand.
In today’s crowded social media landscape, standing out requires leveraging trends. However, as Khaing learned, following trends without discernment can dilute an educational organization's unique voice. “In a field as impactful as education, where the primary goal is development, not commerce, it’s essential to maintain authenticity,” Khaing shared.
For Inkukuleko, the organization where she launched her service learning, this meant prioritizing the organization’s core mission—supporting education and growth—over fleeting trends. Her experience highlighted the importance of thoughtful brand positioning, where authenticity and thought leadership play a more significant role than popularity alone.
For Khaing, working on social media content was more than just creating posts; it was about bridging the gap between the organization and its audience—students, youth, and young professionals. "I enjoyed immersing myself in the audience's perspective, understanding their aspirations, and representing Inkukuleko’s mission in ways that resonate with them," she said. Crafting impactful, story-driven web content became a rewarding part of her internship, helping her see the potential of social media as a tool for positive community growth.
Khaing believes service learning is invaluable for university students. “For me, it was a chance to communicate, commit, and expand my network. It’s an experience I fully support, as it brings learning beyond the classroom and prepares us for professional environments.” Service learning, she reflects, is a bridge between academic theory and practical experience and one that has enriched her time at Parami University.
Through service learning, Khaing Thazin Phyoe and students like her gain not only professional skills but also personal insights that shape their future academic and career paths by building connections, understanding diverse perspectives, and using those experiences to make a real difference.
