Parami sophomore student Myo Myint Maung Maung successfully completed the prestigious Don Lavoie Fellowship, hosted by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, during the fall semester. Designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduates with a passion for economics and social sciences, the fellowship focuses on market processes, Austrian economics, and political economy. Through seminars, workshops, and readings, participants develop critical thinking skills and connect with scholars from around the world.
As a student majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Myo joined the fellowship to deepen his understanding of economic systems, philosophy, and technology. Through engaging in seminars, workshops, and discussions with scholars from around the world, he expanded his analytical and critical thinking skills.
Reflecting on the experience, Myo shared how the fellowship helped him bridge the gap between economics, philosophy, and technology. “I can now confidently dissect Austrian economics, understand concepts like spontaneous order and the knowledge problems within economic systems, and analyze how markets work based on human action,” he noted.
Myo also emphasized that the program enhanced his research capabilities, critical thinking, and ability to analyze economic systems beyond conventional theories.
The fellowship’s collaborative environment encourages meaningful connections with peers and mentors, fostering the ability to challenge assumptions, present ideas effectively, and engage in productive discussions. Myo explained, “The program encouraged me to think differently and critically examine the role of individuals and technology in society. It boosted my confidence in addressing contemporary challenges like digital transformation and economic inequality.”
He also offered advice to future applicants: preparing thoroughly, understanding foundational works by economists like Hayek and Mises, setting clear academic and career goals, and being ready to participate actively in discussions are key to success.
Myo’s achievement exemplifies Parami University’s commitment to fostering global learning opportunities and interdisciplinary exploration. Students are encouraged to seek experiences beyond the classroom to advance their academic and personal growth. Myo’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration for future Parami students to pursue similar opportunities, equipping themselves with the tools to tackle real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.
