Parami community encourages women to recognize their potential and self-contribution

A Virtual Celebration of Parami University's International Women's Day 2025
A Virtual Celebration of Parami University's International Women's Day 2025

International Women's Day is more than a celebration—it is a time for reflection, recognition, and action. It is an opportunity to honor the women who shape our lives in grand, history-making ways and in the quiet, everyday moments that build communities. For many of us, it is a day to acknowledge progress while recognizing the challenges.

For Parami Faculty, Dr. Dale Mineshima-Lowe, International Women's Day is about celebrating the contributions of women, both big and small, and acknowledging the support systems that uplift them. First-year student Susan sees it as a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality, a way to reaffirm that women deserve equal rights. Third-year student Eaint, reflecting on Myanmar's societal norms, views the day as a chance to showcase women's capabilities and push against outdated perceptions.

"This day is a moment for women to pause and reflect on our past achievements, how far we have come, and where we still need to go," said Htet Won, a second-year student.

The Women Who Inspire Women

The panelists highlighted that inspiration often comes from the women closest to them, such as their mothers, grandmothers, and mentors. Seeing a mother work tirelessly to support students with limited resources teaches resilience and creativity. A grandmother's wisdom and perseverance in the face of challenges serve as a model of strength. Women leaders, both local and global, provide a beacon of resilience and community engagement. These figures remind us that the fight for gender equality is deeply personal and rooted in everyday acts of courage and determination.

The Role of Education in Uplifting Women

Education is one of the most powerful tools for challenging inequality. Many women historically believed that education was not meant for them, but by maximizing access to education, we empower them to see new possibilities and make choices for their futures.

As Thea, a Parami staff member, noted, "Education is one of the most powerful tools for challenging inequality. When we educate women, we don't just change individual lives; we transform families, communities, and society."

At Parami University, an interdisciplinary curriculum equips students not only with career-ready skills but also with knowledge that fosters the personal growth of all individuals, not only women but also men. Education inequalities have long-term consequences, shaping future opportunities and reinforcing societal beliefs about who can contribute and how. As the panelists highlighted, addressing these inequalities is essential for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Navigating Education as a Woman

Women continue to face gender-based stereotypes in education, particularly regarding which fields of study they should pursue.

A second student, Aye Moet, shared that "my father encouraged me  to embrace leadership from a young age, teaching self-defense and self-management skills." That support gave her the confidence to continue her academic journey and give back to her community. Her story is a testament to the importance of fostering an environment where women feel empowered to lead and learn.

Uplifting Women's Voices at Parami University

To further support women's voices and diverse perspectives at Parami University, we must create more opportunities for dialogue and mentorship. While events like International Women's Day provide a platform for discussion, sustained efforts are needed year-round. Dr. Dale Mineshima-Lowe suggested initiatives such as women's conferences, mentorship programs, and community-building activities that encourage reflection, support, and growth.

By continuing to create spaces where women can share their experiences, challenge societal norms, and uplift each other, we take meaningful steps toward greater equality. International Women's Day serves as both a celebration and a call to action—a reminder that the journey is ongoing and that we all have a role to play in shaping a more inclusive future.
