Critical Thinking: An Important Skill to Become Good Leaders

Critical thinking is crucial for everyone, especially young people, to become good leaders in different sectors. As living in an ethnically diverse society, critical thinking skills are essential for young people in Myanmar who aspire to become more open-minded and good leaders with critical thoughts.

What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is the process of analyzing, interpreting, and having open-mindedness to listen and see things from different perspectives. In addition, it is one of the four C's of 21st Century skills: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity.

As a liberal arts and sciences institution, the pedagogical elements at Parami aims to provide students with the sought-after skills—critical and creative thinking skills, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills.

Maun Pi, a student from the Parami Fall semester modular period 1, reflected on his lessons from the Critical Thinking class. It [critical thinking skills] is essential in leadership and business because it helps you listen to everyone's voice and evaluate how to solve problems effectively and efficiently. Our unconscious mind allows us to believe what we want to believe. Using critical thinking skills in daily life and the workplace helps me see everyone's perspective and approach the problems unbiasedly,"

Even before introducing new programs and modular courses, critical thinking is one of the key skills of liberal arts education that the Parami seeks to provide students through the Parami Leadership Program (PLP).

"I have developed my critical thinking and analytical skills from Identity and Ethics class. I have now become more liberal in a way that I can let go of [unhealthy] ways of thinking and attitudes that I hold tight for years, like, I used to blame my surroundings people for their weaknesses and mistakes," said Yan Aye, PLP 7th Cohort alumnus.

Critical thinking allows leaders at every level to make better decisions, become open-minded, form a well-informed opinion, enhance creativity and curiosity and learn to embrace diversity and differences.
