Celebrating Parami’s 5th Anniversary with New Purpose and InspirationJanuary 06, 2022
January 9 of this year marks the fifth anniversary of the founding of Parami University, formerly known as Parami Institute, Myanmar's first liberal arts institute. Five years ago, Parami was founded with a mission to redefine the future of education. Parami equips Myanmar youth with a liberal arts education encompassing 21st-century skills: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity that could nurture them to become critical thinkers and socially responsible individuals.
Parami started with the first cohort of a semester-long leadership program selecting 17 outstanding young Myanmar graduate candidates across the country's socio-economic and cultural spectrum. In 2019, Parami introduced a year-long program and welcomed 35-36 students for the PLP 6th cohort. Parami now has nearly 150 alumni who are talented individuals across Myanmar and have become critical leaders and change agents in their respective professions and communities.
In celebration of Parami's anniversary, Dr. Kyaw Moe Tun, the President of Parami University, reflected on the challenges that Parami has gone through in 2021 and talked about Parami's envisioned future in providing continuing education opportunities to Myanmar youth amidst the challenges and crisis.
"The year 2021 was the most tumultuous one for all of us in Myanmar. The country, already battered by the pandemic, was horrified by a military coup on February 1, 2021. Never did I think that the hopes of our young people would be so unjustly dashed. Never did I think that the dreams of our young people would be so brutally shattered. Never did I think the futures of our young people would be so cruelly crushed. Appalling stories of the past told by our parents and elders are being rewritten every day right in front of our eyes. Things that we thought that we had passed have come back to haunt us. It is a disgrace to the aspirations of the young people, who wish nothing else but their right to self-determination. Amidst this tragedy, one thing has become clearer to me: the modern history of our nation has yet to begin, and that modern history must be written by our youth.
Education is their right––and ours––to right the wrong. As an educator, I am more determined than ever to ensure that our young people, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, have their rightful say to determine the future of this country. On this fifth anniversary of Parami and this new year, I wish to reinvigorate that commitment and see to it. I wish everyone a newfound purpose and aspiration in the year 2022." ⸺Dr. Kyaw Moe Tun, the President of Parami University
In late 2020, Parami's organizational components were re-structured to fit the needs of the university as a whole, which constitutes two learning institutes and one research center: Parami Institute of Undergraduate Studies (PIUS), Parami Institute of Continuing Education (PICE), and Center for Research, formerly known as Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR).
Despite the challenges in 2021, the Parami Institute of Continuing Education (PICE) at Parami University successfully offered over 50 courses to 500 students free of charge in the 2021 fall semester.
With a common goal to promote higher education in Myanmar, the Parami community, including our faculty members, alumni, students, and staff from different parts of the world, are heartily celebrating this special day asynchronously. You are cordially invited to join in commemorating the fifth anniversary of Parami. Write Your Wishes for Parami 5th Anniversary.
