Parami University's 2020 Milestones

As 2020 comes to a close, we are very excited to manifest the list of notable milestones Parami has accomplished in the mission of Parami University's establishment, a one-of-a-kind kind liberal arts university in Myanmar. Despite the challenges and impediments due to the global pandemic, Parami achieved these milestones because of our generous donors and supporters. The key milestones we realized in the year 2020 include two main sections—campus development and institutional development.

(1) Campus Development

March 2020: Completion of campus masterplan
  • Completion of campus masterplan

Two Yangon-based architecture firms, Linn Innovative Networks and ZAD Office worked closely with the Parami team to finalize Parami campus designs in early 20Completion of campus masterplan20, completing the vision for a modern, innovative residential and learning space for future Parami students.

  • Contracting Engineering Firm

The tender for engineering services was awarded to internationally recognized engineering firm, Meinhardt, which is currently working to assess the site and construction requirements to bring the architectural designs to life.

  • Completion of soil test

The soil test of the campus site was completed in September 2020.

  • Formation of tender review committee

The five-person tender review committee features representatives of the Parami University Board of Trustees as well as independent experts in the construction field.

(2) Institutional Development

October 2020: Formation of independent Board of Trustees
  • Formation of independent Board of Trustees and the first BOT meeting of Parami University Company Limited by Guarantee

The inaugural Board of Trustees comprises 14 trustees from academia and various other backgrounds, with long-standing dedication to Parami University initiative. The formation of the Board is part of Parami University’s effort to practice good governance and diligent oversight to ensure integrity and sustainability of the institution.

  • $3.7 million fundraised for Parami University campus development

To date, a total of $3.7 million, both raised and in pledges, has been committed to constructing Parami campus in Hmawbi, including four building donors. This marks half of the estimated budget for campus construction, which is planned to take place in early 2021.

  • Initiation of Accreditation process

One of the commitments of Parami University to provide international standard education is to obtain international accreditation. The University, with the support of the affiliate institution Bard College, has initiated the process to apply for accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education - the success of which would ensure global competitiveness of the degrees granted by Parami University.

  • Signing Memorandum of Understanding with Bard College

Parami University and the affiliate institution, Bard College, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a collaboration in education and academic research. This formalizes the long-standing support of Bard College in the effort to establish the first liberal arts and sciences institution in Myanmar, and paves way for heightened academic and technical exchange between the two institutions, including cooperating to provide dual degrees to Parami graduates in the future. Dr. Kyaw Moe Tun and Dr. Leon Botstein, presidents of Parami University and Bard College, respectively, signed the MoU on behalf of their organizations.

Our Journey into 2021

Looking forward, the Parami team expects to keep a good momentum on campus development, fundraising, and academic formulation processes, despite uncertainty surrounding external circumstances.

In terms of academic formulation, an academic working group will initiate the process of curriculum development in March 2021, with the aim to design a curriculum that balances both international and local contexts to foster intellectual pursuit, leadership and service learning among the students. The University team is also planning to increase the effort to fundraise for campus development, whilst expecting to begin the tender and construction process after March 2021.
