Curriculum & Majors

All students enrolled in Institute of Undergraduates Studies at Parami University must go through a rigorous liberal arts & sciences education curriculum. Liberal education is characterized by its ability to contribute to the whole academic, intellectual, and personal growth of an individual. Liberal education accomplishes this by providing an interdisciplinary learning in a wide breadth of courses in physical, biological, and social sciences, as well as the arts and humanities. Parami believes that liberal education best prepares an individual to hone the 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, complex problem solving, and articulate communication.

The students must take a wide variety of seminar and disciplinary courses in their first two years so that they are equipped to engage with the world around them in a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective. Once they have completed such courses, they will be able to decide on one of the following majors by the end of their second year. In each major, the students will have to choose a focus or a concentration to further develop their expertise and skills in that particular concentration.

Philosophy, Politics, & Economics

With a highly interdisciplinary characteristic, PPE provides a wide range of disciplines and courses for students to study. The study of philosophy enhances students’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to dissect complex problems. Studying politics trains students to observe different political systems, concepts, and impacts. With knowledge and concepts that students acquire from the subject, it enables them to analyze and make a better decision in selecting a particular political system that aligns with modern societies. Studying economics helps students to have a better understanding of the interaction among people, businesses, markets, and governments. It also prepares students to become adjustable to unexpected changes and turn these changes into opportunities.

PPE can be a great choice for those who are interested yet also willing to explore in Politics, Philosophy, or Economics for further specialization––for Master and Doctoral degrees. PPE is also for those who show interest in exploring the connections between these interlinked disciplines. It is regarded as a major that gives students a broad understanding of how our current world works through different lenses. PPE is usually mentioned as the degree that produces aspiring national and global leaders.

Urban & Environmental Studies

Urban & Environmental Studies

Urban and Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes the study of interactions between the human world and the natural world. Standing at the intersection of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, the study is becoming increasingly relevant and applicable in today’s rapidly urbanizing world which is suffering from monumental environmental impacts.

It also has immense application locally. Myanmar is identified to be at a significant risk of climate change over the coming years, and the recent trends in economic growth and modernization have been putting increasing population, infrastructure and management pressure on Myanmar’s cities. Urban & Environmental Studies allows students to learn insights, developments and trends in both global and local contexts.

In this program, students can design their studies, and direct their degree towards either urban studies or environmental studies based on their interests. Under this major, students tend to explore diverse classes such as Ecology, Applied Research and Statistical Methods, Environmental Science, Geographic Information System, Environmental Policy and Sustainable Food Systems.

Computational & Statistical Science

Computational & Statistical Sciences

Computational and Statistical Sciences major includes two core studies such as computer science and data science. Computational Sciences involves subjects in data structures and algorithms, software engineering. Statistical Science emphasizes data science, and is highly used to solve problems in various contexts, including social science, public health, medicine, engineering, finance, technology and business. In this major, students will also learn the use of computational, programming and statistical tools and softwares such as Python, Stata, Java, C++, Excel, Statistical Analysis System (SAS), R Programming and more in processing data, especially for analyzing Big Data. With interdisciplinary characteristics, this program equips students with skills in analyzing, predicting, and solving complicated phenomena.

As an interdisciplinary major, the Computational and Statistical Sciences offers flexibility in choices of courses. Students can choose their preferable specialization later in their course of study. This program is ideal for people who are interested in understanding and addressing challenges, phenomena, and problems by using the computational and statistical tools.
