History

Since 2003, the Pre-Collegiate Program of Yangon (PCP) has been providing liberal education to Myanmar high school graduates. Through intensive discussion based interdisciplinary learning and volunteering, PCP has cultivated critical thinking and civic engagement in generations of youth. Many graduates currently hold leadership positions in the private and public sectors in Myanmar after further pursuing university education abroad.

Expanding the mission of PCP, these graduates are now seeking to establish a liberal arts and sciences university in Myanmar to provide a home-grown international standard liberal education that is accessible to accomplished Myanmar youths from diverse backgrounds.

Vision

There are many new educational programs in Myanmar, such as vocational and professional schools that attempt to address the immediate needs of the country; however, these schools by nature barely promote democratic principles and responsible citizenship for the long-term needs for any developing country. Schools of higher education that nurture critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning and articulate communication in Myanmar are essentially nonexistent to impart sustainable democracy in Myanmar. With the vision to create change agents from all walks of life, Parami Institute aims to transform our youth to effective leaders and responsible citizens through liberal education.

Who We Are

In order to expose Myanmar students and families to the value of this kind of learning, the Parami University Founding Committee, directed by Kyaw Moe Tun, Ph.D., launched its inaugural Parami Institute in downtown Yangon in January of 2017. It is a 501(c) not-for-profit organization.

The Parami Institute's ultimate goal is the establishment of a full-fledged, not-for-profit residential liberal arts and sciences university in Myanmar, Parami University. In aim of laying the groundwork for this monumental goal, the Institute has first initiated its Parami Leadership Program (PLP), a semester-long, postgraduate educational program. PLP's first, Spring Semester 2017 cohort graduated this May.

The Parami Institute is officially partnered with and actively supported by Bard College and Centre College, some of the top liberal arts and sciences colleges in the United States.  It is also endorsed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) and Centre College president John Roush.
